⭐ out of 5
If you've read any of my other recent book reviews, you'll already know that I start them all off by saying that every book starts off with the full 5 stars and I'm always hopeful that they will all still be there, stuck firmly in place, by the time I close the back cover. You'll also know that I'm not shy about removing stars but that I always give my reasons for doing so within the review, they don't just vanish without a trace for no reason.
There's only about an hour and a half until my bedtime and tomorrow is a busy day, so this book will take longer than usual to read, but I'm hoping it'll be worth the wait.
Lets get going with the reading and reviewing shall we?
It's been a good book so far, but there's been a mention of a short-term accommodation place and a technology product, so at page 8 the first star is already looking wobbly, but I'll give it a chance and if there's mention of another trademark then the first star will, unfortunately, be coming off.
Page 9 mentions the accommodation place again and the word "rent" is in capitals and a different font which looks very bizarre and takes my concentration away from reading the story, so after only 9 pages, we're already down to four stars unfortunately. On page 10 there's a car brand as well, but I've already removed a star for trademark infringement so, like with other books I've reviewed, I won't take another one off for that. And another trademark and a famous singer on page 14 - such frequent usage is starting to spoil the book for me now, unfortunately.
The first chapter was really good and I can't wait to keep reading!
I've just read the first page of the second chapter and I'm mightily confuzzled already... who is Artie and why are they suddenly talking about the appearance of a woman they are seeing?? I'm already not liking this chapter for the language usage alone.
There are already three new characters in chapter two, plus the three in the first chapter makes 5 characters and I barely know any of them! I've already forgotten the first chapters two characters, plus the three I've met in two pages of chapter two means that the second star is wobbly as well... if there's just one single more character introduced, it'll be a 3 star book before bedtime. I had high hopes for this book, but I was obviously wrong.
And now foul language unnecessarily means another star comes off... what started off as a wonderful book has quickly become a chore to read unfortunately.
Just finished chapter two and it was a huge disappointment after the first one... chapter 3 is the last chance to pull things back or the final star is coming off and I'm giving up on the book as my second DNF in as many days.
Chapter 3 was no better and it's almost my bedtime so I'm gonna leave it for tonight and hope that the rest of the book is less confusing.
I've read maybe three pages of chapter 4 and I'm bored out of my skull so this book is down to two stars now. If it had all been written like the first chapter then it'd've been a 5 star book but the author seems to have lost her spark and just writing because she has to... a tight deadline from her agent/publisher/editor maybe?
The end of chapter 4 had been building in my mind from pretty much the first chapter, it's just a shame that I had to read so much crud to get there! Has the author found her spark again?
Oh dear. The author is advertising her other books within this book which has ruined the atmosphere for me, so the final star is coming off and it's my second DNF in a row.
