Nite nite orl/goodbye 2024

I'm saying goodnight to all my wonderful readers for the last time in 2024 and I want to scream a huge thank you to each and every one of you for keeping reading throughout the last year - seeing those "read" numbers grow for each post throughout each day gives me the motivation to keep going and keep posting and most importantly not giving up.


I'm hoping to put more honest health posts up next year 'cos my best friend C has been quietly encouraging me to let my mask lower ever so slightly and it's starting to feel like yes, my feelings, my emotions and my health do matter and it is OK to talk about how I'm genuinely feeling at any given time.  I have as much right to be gloomy and whiney and struggling as you do to not read those posts if you don't want to.  My mask has been firmly in place for the last 35 years so 2025 is gonna be the year that I try and pluck up the courage to let it slip and be honest enough to tell people "no" or "not right now" without apologising.


I've kept my New Year's Resolution this year and unless something drastic happens before midnight, there's no way I can break it now.  I'll be unashamedly busy throughout January because of JanNo and I'm not going to apologise for being unavailable for the first time in my life.


I'm not sure when/how often/what I'll post until I've finished JanNo, so don't worry if there aren't my usual good morning/to-do/goodnight posts for a while - I'll be fine, I'll just be in a totally new headspace covering lots of firsts so I'll need to zone out potentially for the full 31 days.


Gotta remember that as well as JanNo it's the weekly virus scan and backups tomorrow too - you watch me forget though lol


This final blog post of the year is the longest one I've made for a while so I'm gonna shut up now and head on up to beddy-byes in the hope that the fireworks from my very local pub don't wake me up/keep me awake this year.

I think I've decided to...

...just take my blood pressure readings first thing every morning as well as when I'm feeling something strongly to start with, instead of going straight from 21 readings a week to just a single one - that might be a bit too much of a shock to the system, so that's what I'll do for a while and take it from there.


I'll try and remember to take my blood pressure as soon as I've finished JanNo 'cos I'll hopefully feel proud/relieved/tearful and I want to record it so that I can see how different it is to my normal readings.


Slowly reduce my consumption rather than suddenly cut it out completely kinda thing.

Book Review: "THE SIMPLE WAY TO EDIT: How to edit your book in three easy steps" by Ian Stables

⭐⭐ out of 5

If you've read any of my other recent book reviews, you'll already know that I start them all off in the same way - by saying that every book I read and review starts off with the full library-load of stars and that I'm always hopeful that they will all still be stuck firmly in place by the time I close the back cover.  You'll also know that I'm not shy about removing stars but that I always give my reasons within the review - they don't just vanish.


I borrowed this book because I've written my first ever grown up (as opposed to adult) memoir and I haven't got the foggiest clue what I'm doing with the editing so I'm hoping that this book will take me by the hand and lead me gently towards getting a more polished first draft.


Let's get going shall we?


The book is only 30 pages and the first screen on my Kindle says it'll take less than 30 minutes to read, so we shall have to wait and see... I'm starting to read at 1.44pm so it should be finished before 2.15pm but we shall have to wait and see.


I already disagree with this author... they are saying to edit your manuscript as you go and you'll be left with a finished manuscript at the final full stop instead of having to go through it all from beginning to end and potentially forgetting your train of thought as you wrote each section and I can see how that might be good for shorter manuscripts and/or those with a very detailed plan, but it's not what has worked for me so far.  I'll keep reading, but if I'm already disagreeing so soon, I can't see me getting much benefit further through the book.


That's the first star gone for use of a brand name potentially without permission and also a search engine for the same reason, so we're down to 4 stars and not a single word has helped me so far, so the second star is wobbly too.


Now the author is saying that you should leave the editing until you've finised writing your book - make up your mind!!  That's the second star off!


The author is finishing their book by saying that you shouldn't edit as you write, even though that was one of their first tips - to edit at the end of each small section!  Which do I believe please - the advice at the start of the book to edit each small section as I go or the advice at the end not to edit at all until it's completely written?  That's 3 stars gone now!


What a complete waste of 42 minutes of my life that I'll never get back!

Today's (31st December 2024) lunch photo

My last meal of the year is the last box of mince pies and I'll fill up the 500ml glass with water when my carer gets here, but like yesterday she can come into the house, sign in then sit down, relax, recover from her morning and prepare for her afternoon for the last visit with the "easy client" of the year.


It'll be instant soups from tomorrow onwards so there won't be a photo until my carer has arrived and I've been able to boil the kettle and make my lunch... my carer will have multiple chances to do what I'm paying for tomorrow, but whether she actually does or not remains to be seen!

Mornin' all

I've woken up stiff as a board, full of cold, wiped out and just generally bleurgh.


I've taken my first blood pressure reading of the day, popped my morning pills, run the daily virus scan, made myself a hot choccie and put my FitBit on to charge so I'm just waiting for my carer to turn up in a couple of hours time.


Today is the day that I do my yearly reorganisation of files to get ready for the New Year starting tomorrow.  With my blood pressure and meal photos, I'm thinking that I'll have monthly folders within each folder so that it's easier to organise myself and the .jpg's won't get so pixellated by the end of the year... this year has basically been an organisation year for me lol.


My groceries are due this afternoon and I've gotta remember to put in my next order too - you watch me forget though lol

Book Review: "Book Editing: How to Edit Your Nonfiction Book Like a Pro" by Kathy Gaudry

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of 5

All the books I've read and reviewed most recently have started off with me saying that they all start off with the full desk-load of 5 stars and that I'm always hopeful that they will still be sitting there proudly by the time I close the back cover.  I also admit that I'm not shy about removing stars but that I always give my reasons for each removal within my review, they don't just vanish in a puff of smoke for no reason at all.


I've written my first ever grown-up (as opposed to adult) memoir about my rare neurological disability and haven't got a clue about how I go about getting the brain-dump that it currently is, into a publishable, readable manuscript that I'm really hoping this book will be able to help me with.


Lets get going shall we?


I'm up to page 13 already and this book is already opening my eyes to just how different fiction is to non-fiction and I've basically gotta start with a fresh, clean page and an open mind and re-learn a totally different way of editing.  My best friend has already read through my vomit draft of my memoir and has pointed out gaping holes in what I've written which hurt but I needed to hear and this book is saying similar things so maybe my manuscript needs to go through its first major re-write as opposed to edit?


Up to page 17 now and this book is a true goldmine!


Up to page 23 now and I've yet to find a reason to take off a single star.  If, like me, you are new to writing grown-up non-fiction and you've written your baby and glowing with deep pride at your phenomenal writing ability, go and reward yourself with your favourite beveridge and snack, allow yourself to bask in the glow of pride for a few days/weeks then get your credit/debit card out and invest in this absolutely incredible editing Bible.


Up to page 36 and I'm stopping for a breather/my lunch.  This book is gonna be bought (it's currently borrowed on Kindle Unlimited) when I've finished reading and reviewing it - it's written for non-fiction but with a few very minor tweaks here and there and allowing for the differences in America and the UK, it's well worth me keeping hold of I reckon.


I'd love to get the readability score for my manuscript but it's not working for me for some bizarre reason!


Just finished the book and it's definitely getting bought, even if I never write another non-fiction book in my life.  It's been worth every hour but took considerably longer than the 1 hour and 8 minutes I was told when I opened it lol


This is a must-get book for ALL authors, not just American non-fiction writers!!

Today's (30th December 2024) lunch photo

I've already got my lunch ready (except filling the glass with water) but I'm not allowed to eat it until my carer has signed in, but then she can sit, relax, recover from her previous clients and prepare for the next clients she has on her rota.


Today's lunch is the penultimate box of mince pies and these are the last iced ones that go out of date tomorrow.  I've just gotta fill the 500ml glass with water and bring it all into the living room to eat and drink, then that's it for today.

This book is...

...an absolute goldmine to me.  I borrowed it to help me to edit my NaNo manuscript which is my first ever grown-up, non-fiction, misery medical memoir, but with a few little tweaks here and there I can use it in my children's books too.


It'll be one of the few that I borrow then buy because it's so good... I usually read and review them once then return the book but not this one - it's short (68 pages), well written, fantastically readable and under £3 to buy so that's exactly what I'm gonna do after lunch!

Mornin' all

Well, it's the start of a new week and I'm already having techie troubles... I'm wondering if yesterday's techie issues were Loki reminding me of what He is capable of?


I've already taken my first blood pressure reading of the day, popped my morning pills with a glass of water, run the daily virus scan and unofficially weighed myself... I'm unofficially 2.05kg heavier than my minimum and 50g overweight unofficially but I'm gonna weigh myself after my carer has gone to make it official, but I might just stick to water instead of hot chocolates this week.


It's M's birthday today and I'm expecting a couple of deliveries too, so it's all go today!


JanNo starts on Wednesday so I won't be putting my laptop on the floor and will just be having instant soups for lunch so that I can keep on editing instead of having to stop and start.  I've got two boxes of mince pies left so I'll have those for my lunch today and tomorrow then just the soup and water each day so that I can keep on editing instead of having to stop mid-sentence to eat anything and the water will be a good detox from all the coffee and hot chocolate too.


This first blog post of the day is waaaay too long, so I'm gonna publish it and put today's to-do list together before my carer arrives.

Nite nite orl

Today has been waaay too much for me to cope with and not in a good way so I've popped my last two pills of the day and I'm heading to bed.


I'll see you all in the morning when I've gotta remember that my SILs birthday gift is being delivered to her and my two deliveries are due "by 10pm" so there's the potential of it being a very late night tomorrow, but I've got 2 editing books to read and review so hopefully it won't be as bad as today.

I'm also grateful that...

...nobody has heard or read any of the huge variety of expletives and anger that has slipped out of my mouth or off my fingers today.  At times I've felt like literally picking up the sofa and hurling it through the window then telling whoever was in hearing distance to get knotted.  Chocolate has magical healing powers though and other than a pounding headache and hearing the non-existent music from next door, I'm feeling so much calmer in the time it's taken me to drain the mug of hot chocolate.

Today's (29th December 2024) lunch photo

I've had huuuuuge techie issues today so this is the first opportunity I've had to share my lunch photo with you all.


It was a 500ml bottle of Huel salted caramel meal in a bottle that's suitable for me so it seemed like a good opportunity to have a quick and easy lunch that only needed to be shaken up.  I've also had 100g of banana chips but there's no photo of those 'cos I was verging on sending my laptop through the window at that point!

I'm having huuuuuuuuge email problems and it looks like I might have to re-install the entire programme if the repair doesn't stop throwing up errors and decides to work!


I'm so behind on everything today and this is just putting the tin hat on the lot of it and it's starting to sever my last nerve.


If I was allowed to drink alcohol (which I'm not any more because of my rare disability and the majority of pills that I pop every day), I'd have been in the pub and drunk out of my skull by 8am today!

Mornin' all

I've woken up stuffed full of another cold, cream-crackered, swollen and just generally feeling pretty rotten but I've taken my first blood pressure reading of the day, swallowed my 9 morning pills and run the daily virus scan which found an "advanced issue" which is now resolved.


I'm gonna make myself my first hot choccie of the day then put today's to-do list together.

Nite nite orl

It's been a looooong day today so I'm gonna head straight on up to beddy-byes.


I stupidly made myself a cuppa at 5pm so I bet I'll be up before 3am desperate for a wee then I'll struggle through the rest of tomorrow totally alone.  I'll only have one carer tomorrow and I haven't had a bath today so I'm planning on spending the day just chilling out and trying to recover.

Today's (28th December 2024) lunch photo

Today's lunch was the last quarter of my vegan Christmas protein and a 500ml glass of water, so lunches will either be a mug of instant soup or a packet of crisps, depending on when and where my carer decides to sit down and recover - if she chooses the kitchen then it'll be crisps and if she decides on the slightly more comfortable living room, it'll be soup.  If she decides to change her mind then it'll be crisps... either way, my lunch for the next 5 months will be somewhere between 77 and 700 calories a day.


It's Sunday tomorrow and I'm not seeing my in-laws for personal/family reasons, so I'll be able to have a protein shake and box of mince pies for my lunch tomorrow.
