Nite nite orl

I've taken my last two pills of the day an hour earlier than normal, but I'm absolutely cream-crackered, cold, stiff as a board and in a lot of pain so I'm gonna take myself off to bed for an early night in preparation for an early start to the weekly virus scan and my first NaNo as a young widow in the morning.  My carer put the duvet on the wrong way round (the bottom of the duvet cover is at the top of the bed and she'd already started going downstairs by the time I realised) at lunchtime, so I've gotta sort that out too.  Basically I'm not having a great day so I'm gonna take myself off to bed to cry myself to sleep again.

To my regular night-time talkers, you'll have to find another means of support for the next little while 'cos I need all the rest I can get right now.

Nite nite orl.

It's a good job that...

...I'll be having a treat-sized bar of chocolate for every chapter that I write for NaNo, 'cos other than drinking chocolates/mochas, I'll be living on under 500 calories a day and considering I'm under where I wanted to be weight-wise, that's not a good thing at all.

There won't be any more photos of my meals until I've finished NaNo so that I don't have to put my laptop on the floor and because it'll just be toast and juice for breakfast and a mug of soup for lunch, it seems pointless just for those couple of weeks.

Starting from tomorrow, for however long it takes, there will be very few blog posts and I doubt there will even be to-do lists 'cos I'll be concentrating on my writing and nothing else.  It's only twice a year in November for NaNo and January for JanNo that I put everything else on hold, but I'm determined to finish it in memory of Steve.

Today's (31st October 2023) lunch photo

Today's lunch was the leftovers I usually have on a Monday, but my jabs left me feeling very sick so decided against lunch yesterday.

I had a huuuge lunch today of 2.5 servings of a vegan family roast, 2.5 servings of roast potatoes, cooked in vegetable oil, a serving of runner beans and a serving of carrots and I'm totally stuffed now lol

Here's today's lunch photo:

Today's (31st October 2023) breakfast photo

Today's breakfast was the same as yesterday's:  two slices of wholemeal 'Toastie' toast with dairy-free spread and a 250ml bottle of orange juice.  Today's meals are going to be cautiously eaten and I'll be actively listening to what my body tells me it needs, not pushing it or taking any risks at all.

Mornin' mornin'

How are you all diddling this morning?

I'm not doing anywhere near as badly as I was thinking.  One of the injection sites is sore and I'm absolutely cold and wiped out, but I'm not feeling anywhere near as nauseous as I did before.  I'm gonna take it easy today (other than asking my lunchtime carer to help me to change the bedding) to help my body to recover as much as possible.  It's leftovers for lunch today instead of yesterday so that will only take about a minute to make then my carer can go and be on time/early for her next client.

I remembered to look at the smart meter this morning and it was 64p at about 4am, so if I allow for being an hour early and also having my computer and kettle on an hour early, that's about 70p which is almost 10p cheaper than it was last week, which I know doesn't sound like much, but it's £3.00 a month which is a free bath a month just by being able to shut the lid on the chest freezer!

I've swallowed my morning pills with my morning glass of water and I've got a decaff coffee on the go now, so I'm all set until my first carer of the day arrives now.

My groceries are being delivered this afternoon.  I hope they're on time rather than 2 hours early again lol  I need to put in my next grocery order too, so I'd best make use of this extra hour and get it sorted then put my day's to-do list together!

I'll BBIAB.

Nite nite orl

I've had a busy day that's put me out of action for several hours for health reasons but I'm hopefully over the worst of it now so with any luck I'll be back to normal again tomorrow.  I'm not gonna take any risks and if I'm even slightly ill or unsure then it ain't happening.

Wanna remember to have a look at the smart meter as soon as I come down tomorrow morning to see how much I've saved after getting the ice chiselled off yesterday.  It's currently at £1.31 but my computer was off for a couple of hours and the hob hasn't been on all day so it's not really been a normal day - I'll hopefully remember to have a look at silly o'clock tomorrow though.

I've popped my last two pills of the day so I'm gonna head on up to beddy-byes for an early night now.

See you all again in the morning.

Nite nite orl.

Book Review: "Laughter is the Best Medicine: Confessions of a Young Surgeon" by Peter Sykes

Kindle Unlimited:
Paperback:
⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of 5 stars

If you've read any of my other recent book reviews, you'll already know the first paragraph off by heart because I always start my reviews in the same way:  every book starts off with the wardful of 5 stars and I'm always hopeful that they will all still be stuck firmly in place by the time I close the back cover.  You'll also know that I'm not shy about removing stars but that I always give my reasons for doing so.  The usual culprit of an otherwise 5 star book heartbreakingly becoming a 4 star book is the use of copyright and/or trademark brands without permission.  There has been one book in all the ones that I've read that has had a magic little sentence right at the back, on the last page after the story had finished that the fifth star was instantly returned and I let out a huuuge sigh of relief.  It's only happened once but I'm always hopeful that it'll happen again.

Let's get reading and reviewing shall we?

That first chapter was soooo intense!  It took about half an hour to read and my coffee is stone cold, but it was soo worth it.  Gonna stop reading there until after I've had my lunch, but I can already tell that I'm gonna really enjoy this book and definitely set to be a five-starer IMNSHO!

The second chapter was a rapid read that had me tutting and shaking my head.... it even brought a smile to my face which is pretty much unheard of!

The third chapter too... I knew what B.I.D was and shuddered when he opened the back door of the 'van'

Chapter 4 was also a rapid read... but I suggest that you don't read it around the time you eat lol

You'll never guess how I feel about chapter 5! lol

Thankfully chapter 6 wasn't anywhere near as gross as I'd been dreading.

I've usually stopped commenting on every chapter by now, so I'll continue until bedtime then only do bigger comments next time I pick up the book.

Chapter 7 was surprising but understandable after what she was going through.

It's a new day and a new chapter... I can't wait to get stuck in!

I'm not gonna comment on every chapter, but chapter 8 got me understanding why some doctors asked certain questions at the start of my illness/disability!

Up to chapter 21 now and the chapters have been waaay too long and dull so I've skipped my way through about 150 pages in the hope that it's just a rough few chapters but each time I've stopped it's still been long and dull, so unfortunately the first star is coming off  :-(

No spoilers, but chapter 29 should have been more carefully thought about and, IMHO, not been included at all... it could easily have triggered a reader who had been through it and given the not-so-innocent reader an idea of their next prank.  Highly irresponsible.

What an amazingly positive end to an at-times heartbreaking book.  If you can forgive the dull middle then it's definitely worth a read for nosey-parkers!

Today's (30th October 2023) breakfast photo

Today's breakfast is potentially the only meal I'll be eating today 'cos I'm having a couple of jabs later and one of them especially makes me very ill so I don't eat or drink anything other than crystalised ginger and ginger beer until I start feeling able to let anything past my lips.  I hope I'm wrong of course, but there may not be any more photos for a while, until I feel up to letting anything pass my lips again.

Breakfast was a simple couple of slices of wholemeal 'Toastie' toast with dairy-free spread and a bottle of orange juice.

Here's today's breakfast photo:

Oh. My. Goddess.

I've been well and truly spoiled with this morning's carer!

She is one of the only ones (Bea is the only other one) who actually did her job and helped me today!  It took 10 minutes to go from sitting on the bottom of the stairs to get undressed to the time that I was clean, fresh and dressed and she even had time to write her notes about the visit too (the other carers are on their phone instead of supporting me so they very rarely have time to write their notes)!

I hope I get her more often now that she's visited once!

I stupidly...

...forgot to check my smart meter as soon as I came downstairs this morning, but it's at 82p after 3½ hours of using my computer, having 2 lights on and boiling the kettle twice, so that ain't too bad at all!

Mornin' mornin'

How's things in your part of the world this morning?

I'm doing OK... woke up at 3am and couldn't get back to sleep so gave up at 4am and came downstairs.

I've got a decaff coffee on the go and I've already had my glass of water and morning pills.

Gotta try and remember to find someone to take Steve's place as my technical guru in the new year.  They've gotta be fluent in HTML, javascript, databases, PHP, VB and C# at the bare minimum but knowing how to explain things in Word or Excel or Windows and if they can explain what I need to look for when buying a new laptop then that's an added bonus.

I posted to Facebook last night, asking for me-friendly recipes that my carers can make in the 10 minutes that I have with them, so hopefully I'll be able to add a few things to my grocery order now that I've taken the stamps off.

My daily virus scan was reassuringly totally clear, so that's a positive way to start the day.

Got a looong time before my morning carer turns up and I've gotta remember to weigh myself, log my weight into FitBit, download the spreadsheet then code and upload it to my homepage before I go for my jabs this morning.  I've also gotta remember to pick up a yellow card before I leave the pharmacy so that I can report the side effects this time.  Gotta bring the rubbish and recycling containers in too, as well as ask Marie to lift down the bowl for me.  I'm seriously hoping that I won't need it, but I prefer to be safe than sorry.

This blog post is waaaay too long, so I'm gonna publish it then put my day's to-do list together while I wait for my carer.  Might even stick my nose back into the book if there's time after I've done that.

Nite nite orl

I've got a busy day ahead of me tomorrow so I dunno how active I'll be, especially if I react badly to either/both of the jabs again, so we shall have to wait and see.

Well, it'll be interesting...

...to see what the reading is on my electricity smart meter tomorrow morning?

Why?

Because my wonderful SIL, Marie, chiselled off the ice that had been stopping the lid on the chest freezer from shutting properly and I had to break off literal icicles every morning.  That won't be happening tomorrow for the first time in a couple of weeks and it'll hopefully use up less electricity too, which will bring my bills down which will add up and be worth it very quickly.

My usual reading at about 5.30am every morning is in the range of 78p to 83p which includes the daily standing charge, but what will the reading be tomorrow?

Today's (29th October 2023) breakfast photo

Breakfast today was a bit different to the last few weeks because there was no hazelnut chocolate spread on it - just the 'Toastie' toast with me-friendly spread and a 250ml bottle of orange juice.

Here's today's breakfast photo:

Mornin' mornin'

How's things in your world this morning?

My cold has gone to my throat now so I'll be coughing a lot and making everyone think it's covid.

Did you all remember to put your clocks back an hour?  I only had to change three of mine - everything else was done automatically, thankfully.

I've had my glass of water with my morning pills and I've got a mug of decaff coffee on the go now, to warm me up while I wait for my morning carer.  Giving my FitBit some juice and I've gotta take the rubbish and recycling out when she's gone.  Will I make it to an hour of support that I've actually received this week?  We'll have to wait and see!

The virus scan found an advanced issue but that was quickly and easily sorted, thankfully.

This blog post is getting waaay too long, so I'm gonna publish it and make a start on my day's to-do list.

Today's (28th October 2023) lunch photo

Today's lunchtime carer did the same as yesterday's in that she whacked the hob up to full blast and it was being brought in here by the time I came out of the bathroom again so that she had 14 minutes to spend talking to someone on her phone and she left after 20 minutes, even though I pay for half an hour twice a day.

Let's not get into another rant about it shall we?

Today's lunch was a 6 minute bowl of spaghetti made and dished up entirely by my carer, which I'm grateful for.

Here's today's lunch photo:

Another weekly caring total

Monday:  1 minute at lunchtime to dish up the leftover Sunday roast

Tuesday:  6 minutes - 1 minute in the morning to put a plaster on my back and 5 minutes to post a letter for me in a postbox that's less than a minute away from here.

Wednesday:  0 minutes - I hope I won't be charged for today, but I prolly will be, just like the other times in the past

Thursday:  0 minutes - she made a difficult job even worse by standing with her body right up against mine as I was getting washed and the rest of it is in the rant I've just posted.

Thurs Lunch:  8 minutes - not only did she do the cooking but she washed up too this afternoon!

Friday:  2 minutes - she helped me to put my bra on back to front twice

Fri Lunch:  6 minutes - she did the cooking at full heat so it had gone from the tin to the bowl in the time it took me to put my laptop on the floor and go for a wee.  She also did the washing up so I had a lot of care today!

Saturday: 3 minutes - to put my clothes on backwards and inside out so I had to get dressed again before I had my breakfast

Sat lunch:  6 minutes - same thing as yesterday lunchtime

Total care I'll be billed for so far this week:  6 hours

Total care I've actually received this week:  32 minutes

I normally...

...dread those brownish envelopes from the Government or DWP so I wasn't looking forward to opening this one, but it contained good news for a change, so that's OK.  I won't stop dreading seeing the colour of the envelope or the logo printed on the front of it, but it's been a relief this time, rather than something to dread, which is a relief.

Today's (28th October 2023) breakfast photo

Just my usual breakfast of 2 slices of wholemeal toast with me-friendly (aka dairy-free) spread and the gorgeous hazelnut chocolate spread, followed by, of course, a 250ml bottle of orange juice and I've got a decaff instant coffee on the go now too, to try and warm me up a bit.

Rant about this morning's carer

I'm sure she's great with her other clients, but this morning's carer's idea of support is filling up the kitchen sink half way with cold water and leaving the cold tap running at full blast so that even with a full kettle of boiling water, it was barely tepid, then talking to someone she lives with on her phone twice while I was getting washed and I know that because the person she was talking to both times was looking for something and my carer told them twice that it was "in my room, on television cabinet, next to CD rack".

To give credit where credit is due, she got the towel for me when she finished the first call and helped me to get dressed by putting my bra on back to front the first time, then inside out the second time, but it was third time lucky for that.  She put my knickers on both inside out and back to front and pulled the socks up so high that the heel is now half way up my calf so when I've stopped shaking I'll have to get dressed for the second time this morning before I have my breakfast.

What started off as being a good day very rapidly changed to being a bad day, purely thanks to my carer.
